How to track money sent from abroad, save or withdraw the money without having to go to traditional banks

Define

Problem

💡 Many individuals want to have more control over the money sent to them, but they can’t

It is impossible to save money for later or for a different time because people need a way to track money sent to them by their family and friends via conventional money transfer platforms. Also, withdrawal is via bank only and no other means.

Solution

To develop a platform that enables users to track, save, spend, withdraw, and perhaps send money to others.

UX Research

As a UX researcher, I created a plan that included user interviews, an analysis of alternative methods, and a competitive audit.

The main objective is to comprehend the difficulties potential users encounter, as well as their pain points, goals, and needs.

Competitive audit

A competitive audit was conducted to familiarize me with the tracking and possible withdrawal process.

I Identified a couple of ways competitors provide tracking means for users

  1. Ability to track funds
  2. The competitor with an app only has App Store support
  3. Competitors concentrate on how users send money, but not as much on how users receive money aside from tracking the funds.

User interviews

I conducted a total of six interviews with individuals who have received funds in the past few months.

💡 The goal is to understand the pain points and how each individual goes about withdrawing their funds.

Classifying users

Discovered some user types

  1. Users who just want to withdraw
  2. Users who want to save(Withdrawal or not)
  3. Users who want to withdraw but do not physically

What I heard

  • I wish there was a way to know how long I have till I withdraw my money.
  • I wish there is a way to get the money without worrying about the Foreign exchange rate
  • I wish I could see a summary of my withdrawals
  • Banks are far from home location, plus the crowd in the bank are always too much
  • Banks give out Cash and it gets difficult to save the money without a domiciliary account.

Research Synthesis

Empathy mapping

I used empathy mapping to highlight significant research findings for all user types and aid decision-making. I prioritized focus points and identified the most crucial takeaways because they improved my understanding of the users through inferences drawn from their behaviors.

Top takeaways

While each user type had different pain points, needs, and goals, it was evident what the takeaways are:

  1. Users want to get their money as easily as possible
  2. Users want to control how they get the money and how they get to make use of it.
  3. Having one way to go about getting the funds sent to them

I moved on to start ideating and visualizing different flows that could make the experience straightforward, enjoyable, and satisfying.

Usability Testing

I sent out the interactive prototype of the app to users and as much as they loved the experience of the app, its accessibility, and the feedback was great 85% of the users gave the comment that they would really use a product like this.

Reflection and Takeaways

Solve a problem, don’t start up as a competitor.

It was a fun and challenging experience with insights into how users really want to use products. Many thoughts came to mind as to what direction to go with for the project: to design an entirely new product or an aid product—a product that helps achieve a certain goal. It was really difficult to not design a product that will solve the problem and also compete with the present platforms offering major transfer services. The goal of this app is to solve a particular problem, so I had to put the solution to the problem above the ambitions or scalability of the product in its initial phase. The product is scalable, and with time, it can grow to become a competitor in its own right to other platforms out there.
